Century College’s fall play Arcadia

Century College’s fall play Arcadia by Tom Stoppard will be presented the last two weekends
in October in the West Campus Theatre. Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays, Oct 19-20 and 26-27, at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, Oct. 21 and 28, at 2 p.m.

Arcadia moves back and forth between 1809 and the present at the elegant estate owned by the Coverly family. The 1809 scenes reveal a household in transition. As the Arcadian landscape is being transformed into picturesque Gothic gardens, complete with a hermitage, 13-year-old Lady Thomasina and
her tutor delve into intellectual and romantic issues.

Present day scenes depict the Coverly descendants and two competing scholars who are researching a possible scandal at the estate in 1809 involving Lord Byron. This brilliant play moves smoothly between the centuries and explores the nature of truth and time, the difference between classical and romantic
temperaments, and the disruptive influence of sex on our choices in life.

Ticket prices are $8 for patrons 18 and older, and $5 for seniors and Century faculty and staff.
Patrons 17 and under are free. Century students also are free with ID.
For tickets, please call 651-748-2623.

4th Annual “Students for a Worthy Cause” showcase event

Once again, we ask: could a Century College student be the next great inspirational speaker?  You are invited to our 4th Annual “Students for a Worthy Cause” showcase event.  On Thursday, Dec. 8th, from 7:00pm-8:30pm, twelve of our Fundamentals of Public Speaking students will be passionately and persuasively advocating on behalf of nonprofit organizations.  Speech presentations will be brilliant, engaging and brief (each student is limited to three minutes).  Each attendee is asked to donate $1.00, if possible, and, after all of the speeches have concluded, the audience will help to determine the winning speech.  We will then donate the collected funds to that nonprofit organization – a gesture that signifies that our students’ voices have the power to directly and positively impact the problems facing our local, national and global communities.  In short, we want all of you (and your friends, family, etc.) there!

Hunger Banquet

“Everyone on Earth has the same basic needs; it is only our circumstances—where we live and the culture into which we are born—that differ.  Some are born into relative prosperity and security, while millions, through no choice of their own, are born into poverty.”
-From the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet

What to Expect: As a participant of the Century College Hunger Banquet, you will draw a ticket which assigns you to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier during the event, based on current socioeconomic statistics.  You will receive a meal according to your income level—filling and nutritious or sparse and simple.  Participating and sharing in a greater dialogue with other Hunger Banquet participants, you will have the opportunity to experience and learn more about what can be done.

How to Register: Interested in the Hunger Banquet?  Sign up at The Connection (W1205) to be one of sixty participants.  Few of you may leave with full stomachs, but all can possess a greater understanding of hunger and poverty—and the motivation to do something to help.

Please join us in our journey to experience and discover the truths and realities of poverty.
