MEDICAL ASSISTANTS TO BE RECOGNIZED
The Century College Medical Assistant Program is gearing up to celebrate Medical Assistants Recognition Week, October 18 – 22, 2010, as designated by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Medical assistants across the country will be recognized during this special week and honored on Medical Assistants Recognition Day, October 20, 2010.
In celebration of Medical Assistants Recognition Week, the Century College Medical Assistant Program has planned the following special events and activities:
  • In lieu of wearing their scrubs attire to class, students will be given the option to wear jeans each day that week for a donation of a $2 (for each day they wear jeans) to be donated to the Century College Foundation “Random Acts of Kindness”. Through the Random Acts of Kindness program, the foundation helps students in crisis situations stay in college.
  • We will also be celebrating with our students in class with a potluck and treats, in acknowledgment of all their hard work and accomplishments.
Medical assisting is an allied health profession whose practitioners function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures. With their unique versatility, medical assistants are proving to be the allied health professional of choice for this decade and beyond. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assisting continues to be projected as one of the fastest growing occupations.
The AAMA is the premier organization serving the professional interests and educational needs of medical assistants. It provides numerous services that help medical assistants put their careers on a successful and rewarding track and keep them there.

Students Matter! As a member of a college community, you are affected by higher education issues such as the cost of tuition, the cost of textbooks, and the availability of financial aid.  MnSCu, MSCSA, and MSUSA have videos of question and answer sessions with the three major party gubernatorial candidates. You can access the video at:
Quoted from MSCSA “Today, we are releasing the full videos.  Each candidate answers questions for 15-20 minutes each on topics including tuition, budget priorities, jobs for graduates, online learning and more. In the weeks before the election we will be releasing issue based versions of the videos that will include each candidate’s answer to a specific question. Look forward to those being released on www.mnstudentsmatter.org, www.msusa.org, www.mscsa.org and all of our social media outlets.”
Take advantage of these video opportunities, be informed, and exercise your right to vote! Contact the Century College Student Senate office, W1490, 651-779-3317, if you are willing to help “Get Out The Vote!”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you to everyone who helped register new voters.  Thank you to faculty who encouraged students to register and vote, distributed forms, or allowed GOTV volunteers to visit classrooms.  Thank you, both as groups and individuals, to staff, clubs, Student Senate members, and volunteers for registering new voters.

Although the pre-registration effort is complete, the Get Out The Vote campaign will continue in an effort to encourage students to vote on November 2.  Please contact Student Senate if you are willing to volunteer.

Thanks again,

Student Senate

Serenity now!
Do you find it frustrating when someone is talking on the phone while you are trying to concentrate with your homework, take a test, or study? Are you having trouble finding a clean place to focus on your school work?
Well look no further, in our Computer Centers we do not allow audible cell phone use. Also, we love to keep the place clean for you and others to be comfortable. That is why we don’t allow food and drinks within the Computer Center. So if you still haven’t found that great place to work on your D2L assignment or type up that English paper without being distracted. Please try us out in one of the Computer Centers.
For Locations and hours see our website and search the keywords “Computer Center”

Hello all –

It’s time to make your nominations for the 2011-2012 Century College common book!   Please click on the link below and submit your nomination.  You may nominate as many books as you’d like.   The committee will use the following criteria in choosing the finalists:

  • Readability and potential for engaging students
  • Literary quality
  • Relevance to first-year students, current society or local community
  • Appeal to a wide range of students
  • Possibilities for additional programming, especially inclusion in first-year courses or other areas of the curriculum
  • Interdisciplinary
  • Richness of content/themes
  • Cost (paper)
  • Length (fewer than 350 pages)
  • Connection to one or more college initiatives or institutional mission
  • Accurate and respectful portrayals of diverse cultures
  • Potential to spark passionate discussion
  • Opportunities for multimedia approaches and creative assignments
  • Potential for author to visit campus

Not every book will meet all of these criteria.  The only one that would disqualify a nomination is if the book is not available as a paperback, simply because the cost would be too high.

All students will be receiving an email with this information as well, but please let the students you work with or teach know about the nomination process.  We value your input and want the whole campus involved in the nomination process.  The deadline for nominations is Friday, October 29, 2010.

To get to the nomination form:

Thanks for your ideas!

Sourcing Locally
Making a Difference

Students and staff that frequent the Fresh Stop Café at Century College on Wednesdays can Make a Difference by selecting the Wednesday Special—it will be made fresh entirely from locally sourced products.
Lancer Hospitality’s commitment to providing quality products, good nutrition and great tasting food includes sourcing the freshest ingredients and using local suppliers. The Wednesday Special provides students and staff with the freshest ingredients as well as helps reduce our impact on the environment.
Using local food vendors reduces transportation costs, consumption of fossil fuels and emissions but also often eliminates wasteful packaging material. Lancer makes sauces and bakery items from scratch on site and buys in bulk to further provide the freshest quality product and reduce unnecessary packaging. Fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally taste better and are packed with nutrients.
Corey Pittman, Lancer Food Service General Manager at Century College said, “People are more concerned with what they eat and where it comes from. Now they can chose to select an entrée that reflects their commitment to making a difference. ”
Students and staff can access the monthly specials, including Wednesday’s Locally Source Selection on the Fresh Stop Café page on Century College Web site as well as learn more about Making a Difference.
