Century Presents Summer Shakespeare Starting June 25

The 36^th season of Shakespeare & Company, Minnesota’s longest running outdoor classical repertory theatre, begins June 25 at Century College and runs through July 31. This year’s productions are The Comedy of Errors, King Lear and The Two Noble Kinsmen.

All performances are held at Century’s Outdoor Theatre Complex on the college’s West Campus, 3300 Century Ave. N., White Bear Lake. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and free for children under 12. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m., and Sundays are at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the ticket booth prior to the performance. Shakespeare’s mad-capped, farcical romp tells the tale of two sets of identical twins accidentally separated at birth. A series of wild mishaps based on mistaken identities leads to wrongful beatings, a near-seduction, arrests, accusations of infidelity, theft, madness and demonic possession. King Lear

One of Shakespeare’s most brutal and most lyrical tragedies, Ling Lear is a shattering study of family dynamics and the portrait of a king and country plunging into madness and chaos. The characters confront fundamental questions of justice, familial duty, sacrifice and possible redemption while the world collapses around them. Famous quote from the play: “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child.” Performances are July 1, July 3, July 9, July 17, July 22, July 30.

Century College Named Business of the Year by White Bear Area Chamber

Century College has been named the 2011 Business of the Year by the White Bear Area Chamber of Commerce.

The award is given annually to a business that “contributes to the local economy in an outstanding manner, showing an exemplified business savvy. The winner has directly helped in industry growth, showed ingenuity, job creation and entrepreneurship.”

 

Chamber leaders noted that Century is the largest two-year college in the state and has doubled its enrollment in the last 11 years. It offers students “an excellent opportunity for the learning that will sustain them throughout their time in the workforce.”

The Chamber noted that Century is a community resource that “provides classes, space for meetings and other services that enhance the well-being of our entire region. Century is particularly important to adults who return to college for career change initiatives after they have had their careers interrupted by the recession.”

According to a study by economist Paul Anton of Anton & Associates, Century returns $175 million in economic activity to the local economy every year.

The Chamber award was accepted by Century Foundation Executive Director Nick Maras and Foundation Board President Linda Kay Smith at a luncheon event on May 17 at Jimmy’s Conference & Catering in Vadnais Heights.

Summer School

1.       Walk-in orientation for summer students only is scheduled for 10:00am-1:00pm this Friday, May 20th.  Walk-in orientation takes place in the west campus computer lab.  Students should being their student I.D. numbers as well as assessment scores with them.  Fall semester students should be directed to make an orientation reservation for sessions scheduled in June-August. 

2.       Summer students still wanting to register after the walk-in session ends on Friday or early next, can be directed to the Admissions office, GPS LifePlan Center/Orientation office or call the orientation helpline at 651-779-3404 to have the orientation hold from their account.

Suspension and Probation at Century

Dear Woody,

I am worried.  I think I may be suspended at the end of this semester.  What do I do?

Dear Worried: 

If you are already on probation and did not complete your spring classes with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 and a cumulative completion rate of 67% then you will be suspended. There are two types of suspensions:  Academic suspension: which prevents you from attending Century; and financial aid suspension which prevents you from receiving any type of financial aid: grants, loans or work study. 

When you are suspended from the attending the college you have two choices:

1.      Serve your suspension. If this is your first suspension, you need to sit out one semester; if this is your second suspension, you are required to sit out two semesters. Before returning to college, you are required to attend a re-admission session to create your academic plan and obtain a re-admit form by the required deadline.

2.      Appeal your suspension based on extenuating circumstances. The College believes that students are responsible for their own academic progress and for seeking assistance when experiencing academic difficulty. However, occasionally a student’s failure to make satisfactory academic progress is due to extenuating circumstances; therefore, we have developed an appeal process for these situations.  You will receive a suspension letter by mail that will explain the dates and times to appeal along with the appeal process. 

If you also received a letter of suspension from financial aid you have two choices:

1. Appeal your suspension based on extenuating circumstances. Follow the appeals process outlined in your suspension letter.
2. If there are no extenuating circumstances, it is recommended that you pay for one term and show academic progress of 2.5 GPA and 100% completion rate for the term.
